don't settle for boredom

Don't just wander around the comic shop waiting to be inspired. Only half worked today - ended up with Epicurus The Sage, which I'm faaaiiirrrly pleased with. Interesting to see what Keith and Loebs did before The Maxx - it's a much rawer style for Keith, kind of reminiscent of old Deadline comics (that Jamie Hewlett/Simon Bisley look that you got in 80's indie comics).

I also like the fact that I've got nothing else like it on my shelf. That's something you should strive towards.

But still... I'm only capable of half-skimming it at the moment (though I'm enjoying the philosophy in-jokes - yeah, I did philosophy at uni, so sue me). Just too damn hot. Sleeper was winking at me suggestively, as was 100 Bullets, but I wanted something new. I guess I've been spoiled by two volumes of Scott Pilgrim in quick succession. After that twin-guitar power chord, I avoided Gosh! for about three weeks.

Today, I wandered around for ages. Picked up an Ultimate Spiderman annual and the latest Iron Man, both left me feeling empty. I'll buy anything with Warren Ellis' name on, and I'll see out this arc, but the super-realistic CGI art sinks the pace. It doesn't click like his stuff does normally. You expect it to flow like music, but all I got was a metronome. USM - yeah, it ticks all the boxes, but it's like eating marshmallow fluff.

But there are places to look for inspiration. Just because you don't live in San Francisco, it doesn't mean you can't visit the Isotope. Even if there's nothing on the front page, go to the forums for threads like this - designed to get you out there and loving comics. Or just flick through the Oni or PlanetLAR websites. Do it!

don't touch me

"You're making it very difficult for me to act in a reasonable and polite manner."
"Yeah? Why's that?"
"Because you're a FUCKING WANKER, that's why."
